Following the closure of Portobello’s last dedicated Greengrocers shop, a group of local residents have got together to try and open a community run, co-operative store selling fresh fruit and vegetables.

UPDATE: From the start, our slogan has been “Bringing Fruit & Veg Back To Portobello”. We always imagined that it would only happen if we, the community, opened our own shop but we are delighted that a commercial greengrocer is opening – Root Down on the corner of Adelphi Place. Whilst we are not involved, we have kept the hope alive for over 2 years that an outlet for fresh produce would one day be back on our High Street and in that respect, we have reached our goal.

We do not wish to compete for the finite custom in Portobello and have taken the decision to stand down our campaign. In due course, we will make a decision as to how best use the funds we have raised (mostly through our stall at Portobello Market which we will no longer be running) for the benefit of the community that has supported us so well. Thank you.
